Syllabus: Postsecondary Educational Counseling

Duration: 4-hour sessions (Monday to Friday) + a 30-minute break every 2 hours.
Program Length: 5 days (20 hours total).

The Postsecondary Educational Counseling service is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, tools, and guidance needed to make informed decisions about their educational and career pathways. This service empowers participants to evaluate their options, understand the requirements and opportunities available, and take the necessary steps to enroll in a program that aligns with their goals and aspirations. The service includes exploring a variety of educational programs and formats to cater to individual preferences, learning styles, and career ambitions.

1. Comprehensive Transition Programs
   
   • Programs designed specifically for students with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
   • Focused on helping participants develop academic, social, and independent living skills.
   • May include opportunities for internships, job placements, or community-based learning.

1. College or University Programs
   
   • Traditional higher education institutions offering associate’s, bachelor’s, or advanced degrees.
   • Emphasis on academic studies in a wide range of disciplines.
   • Opportunities for participants to engage in research, extracurricular activities, and campus life.

1. Career and Technical Education (CTE)
   
   • Programs that provide practical, hands-on training in specific trades or technical fields (e.g., healthcare, IT, manufacturing).
   • Often shorter in duration than traditional degree programs and focused on immediate job readiness.
   • Includes certifications, diplomas, or associate’s degrees that prepare participants for specific industries.

1. Registered Apprenticeships
   
   • Structured programs combining paid, on-the-job training with classroom instruction.
   • Participants gain industry-recognized credentials and hands-on experience in fields such as construction, advanced manufacturing, or information technology.
   • Ideal for individuals seeking to “earn while they learn.”

1. Other Postsecondary Training Opportunities
   
   • Includes specialized training programs such as:
     • Short-term certificate courses.
     • Non-degree programs in emerging fields (e.g., digital marketing, cybersecurity).
     • Community-based training programs focusing on workforce development.
   • Flexible options for participants who may prefer nontraditional education pathways.

Through personalized counseling, participants can:

• Assess their interests, strengths, and career goals to identify suitable programs.
• Explore both local and out-of-area options that align with their unique needs.
• Gain a clear understanding of the requirements, costs, and potential outcomes of different programs.

 Session 1 (2 Hours): Introduction and Goal Setting

To establish a clear understanding of each participant’s goals, interests, career aspirations, and background. This session will set the foundation for personalized counseling and action planning by identifying individual strengths and areas of interest.

Welcome and Overview (15 Minutes)

• Greet participants and explain the purpose of the session.
• Provide an overview of the day’s activities and the overall program goals.
• Encourage an open and collaborative environment where participants feel comfortable sharing their aspirations and challenges.

Individual Discussions (45 Minutes)

• Goals, Interests, and Career Aspirations:
  
  • Ask participants about their short-term and long-term goals, such as:
    • Careers or industries they are passionate about.
    • Educational achievements they wish to pursue (e.g., degrees, certifications).
    • Personal growth objectives (e.g., gaining confidence, developing specific skills).
  • Use guiding questions to explore their interests, such as:
    • What subjects or activities excite them?
    • What type of work environment do they envision for themselves?
    • Are there role models or inspirations influencing their goals?
• Educational and Career Background:
  
  • Discuss their past educational experiences, including:
    • Previous schooling or training programs.
    • Subjects they excelled in or struggled with.
  • Review their work history, if applicable:
    • Explore any job roles, internships, or volunteer work.
    • Identify transferable skills gained from these experiences.

Self-Assessment Activities (1 Hour)

• Administer structured self-assessment to help participants identify their strengths, interests, and potential career paths. Activities may include:
  • Interest Inventories:
    
    • Participants select areas or activities they enjoy from a list (e.g., artistic, technical, or social activities).
    • Discuss how their interests align with potential career fields.

• Skills Assessment:
  
  • Provide a checklist of skills (e.g., technical skills, communication, problem-solving).
  • Have participants evaluate their proficiency and comfort level with each skill.
  • Identify areas they want to develop further.

• Personality and Work Style Reflection:
  
  • Ask participants to consider questions like:
    • Do they prefer working independently or as part of a team?
    • Are they more analytical, creative, or hands-on in their approach?

Reflection and Summary (30 Minutes)

• Review the self-assessment results with each participant.
• Highlight strengths and areas of interest, connecting them to potential educational and career opportunities.
• Encourage participants to reflect on their aspirations and think about what they want to achieve by the end of the program.
